Effects on fertility

In early puberty, deficiencies can cause development problems in your sex organs inhibiting growth and maturation. In men, even a minimal zinc deficiency can cause infertility by reducing testosterone levels and sperm count.

Role in pregnancy

Deficiencies during pregnancy produce a variety of birth defects including skeletal and brain malformations, cardiovascular problems and defects in the central nervous system of the baby. Also a prolonged labour, excess bleeding, eclampsia, risk of infection and hypertension during pregnancy.

Signs of depletion

Fatique, loss of taste, poor appetite, and growth.

Suggested intake

Men - upto 75mg daily.
Women - upto 20mg daily in addition to the prenatal vitamin

Natural source

Meat, shellfish, bread, cereals, dairy foods
