Effects on fertility In early puberty, deficiencies can cause development problems in your sex organs inhibiting growth and maturation. In men, even a minimal zinc deficiency can cause infertility by reducing testosterone levels and sperm count. Role in pregnancy Deficiencies during pregnancy produce a variety of birth defects including skeletal and brain malformations, cardiovascular problems and defects in the central nervous system of the baby.
