Effects on fertility

Deficiencies here will affect both men and women's reproductive functions because vitamin D receptors are found in the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, uterus, oviducts and mammary glands. The sun is especially a good source of this vitamin.

Role in pregnancy

Builds calcium into bones and teeth of developing baby.

Signs of depletion

Muscular weakness, with numbness, tingling and spasms.

Suggested intake

Men - upto 400mg daily
Women - only that which is present in prenatal vitamin. Any extra may lead to birth defects.

Natural source

Sunlight, margarine, egg, oily fish, cod liver oil.
