Effects on fertility Studies linking vitamin A to fertility is scarce but there is some evidence that deficiencies can contribute to PMS by affecting levels of estrogen and progesterone. Vitamin A is essential to sperm production although treatments with vitamin A will not improve the fertility status of men who have no deficiencies of this vitamin. If a lack does exist then supplements can restore sperm count and improve potency. Role in pregnancy Forms baby's tooth enamel and hair, helps growth of thyroid gland. Signs of depletion Night blindness, rough skin, decreased sense of smell, fatique, skin blemishes. Suggested intake Men - upto 10,000iu daily Women - None. Take only what is present in prenatal vitamins. An excess can lead to risk of birth defects. Natural source Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, red chillies, tomatoes, apricots, mango, dark green leafy vegetables. Liver, cheese, eggs, oily fish, milk. |
